“I keep applying to auditions, but I never seem to get chosen.” “I want to give it a try, but I don’t know how to prepare.” We hear these concerns from aspiring models all the time. This article is written for anyone aiming to become a model and preparing for auditions, covering what agencies and clients are actually looking at, and what the people who get selected have in common. Everything here is something you can start doing today, even with no experience.
Auditions Are Not Only About Who Looks “Best”
The Top Priority Is Whether You Fit the Project
This may come as a surprise, but the biggest factor in an audition result is not who is “better.” It is whether you match the type that this particular project or agency is looking for right now.
No matter how striking you are, you will not be chosen if you differ from the image they have in mind. Conversely, even someone with little experience will be chosen if they fit that image perfectly. Knowing this in advance will help you avoid taking a rejection harder than you need to.
Do Your Photos Match the Real You?
Once you pass the photo screening, what matters most at the interview is whether the impression from your application photos matches the impression you give in person. If you apply with heavily edited photos, that gap will work against you when you meet face to face.
An agency is deciding whether they can send you out to a shoot with confidence. Photos that convey your real appeal accurately are, in the end, your strongest asset.
Can You Work Well on Set?
Modeling is teamwork. You will be working with photographers, stylists, clients and many others. Shoots can run long, and there is often waiting time involved.
For that reason, the basics — whether you greet people properly, listen carefully, and take direction openly — are watched far more closely than most people expect. This has nothing to do with experience, and you can start practicing it today.
What Makes the Difference in the Photo Screening

Send Natural Photos, Not Heavily Edited Ones
As mentioned above, the top priority is that your photos convey the real you. Avoid skin smoothing and facial reshaping, and use photos taken in natural light. Photos taken on a smartphone are perfectly acceptable.
Prepare Both a Full-Body Shot and a Bust-Up Shot
Agencies look not only at your face, but at your overall balance and atmosphere. Prepare at least one full-body photo and one bust-up photo where your face is clearly visible.
Keep Your Clothing and Background Simple
Simple, unfussy clothing such as a T-shirt and jeans works best. Patterns and layered outfits make it harder to read your build and atmosphere. For the background, choose something plain such as a white wall so that attention stays on you.
Include Both a Neutral Expression and a Smile
Preparing both a neutral expression and a smiling one makes it easier for an agency to judge your range. If the application guidelines specify anything, always follow those instructions.
What They Are Watching for at the Interview
Greetings and How You Answer
Can you greet people in a clear, audible voice? Can you answer questions in your own words? You do not need to say anything special. Even if you are nervous, a sincere and courteous attitude always comes across.
Can You Follow Directions Accurately?
They are watching whether you can respond quickly and accurately to instructions such as “please turn to the right” or “could you walk for us.” This connects directly to how you will move on set.
Posing and Walking Show How Much You Have Practiced
Even with no experience, simply practicing expressions and poses in front of a mirror will change how you move on the day. Filming yourself on your smartphone and reviewing the footage will reveal the gap between how you think you look and how you actually appear.
Give Accurate Profile Information
Report your profile details, such as height and sizes, accurately. Submitting information that differs from reality can lead to problems later, such as wardrobe not fitting on the day of a job. Sharing your real figures is the shortest route to finding work that genuinely suits you.
What Models Who Pass Auditions Do to Prepare

Understand Your Own Type Objectively
Think objectively about what atmosphere you project and what kinds of projects might suit you. Asking friends or family for their impressions is also useful. When you understand your own strengths, both your application and your interview answers become far more concrete.
Research the Agency You Are Applying To
Look at the agency’s website to see the atmosphere of their models and the kinds of work they handle. Once you understand what an agency is looking for, the direction for your photo selection and presentation becomes clear.
Arrive in Good Condition
Getting enough sleep and being in good physical shape shows in your expression and posture on the day. Nothing special is required — simply rest early the night before and give yourself enough time to reach the venue without rushing.
Read the Application Guidelines Carefully
Following the instructions — the number of photos, the items to fill in, the eligibility requirements — is the most fundamental step. If these are not followed, you may be dropped from consideration before anyone even looks at your content.
Advice from a Model Agency
Liliana Models is a Tokyo-based model agency with more than 1,600 registered models from a wide range of nationalities.
Drawing on our experience casting models for auditions across many companies and productions — and winning those places — we would like to share some tips for passing auditions.
As a starting point, every project and production has its own vision and preferences regarding the type of model they want, and the client’s wishes will always take priority.
Before any of that, however, there is something important to know: attend your audition with your business manners in order — greetings, a warm expression, and a well-groomed appearance.
As far as possible, aim for formal clothing and hair, along with polite language and conduct.
This deserves particular attention if modeling or entertainment is your first career and you have never worked in a conventional company, or if you are a teenage or student model. Take care that your overall look is not too casual.
Companies operate according to the customs of wider society, and if their first impression leaves them uneasy, they will hesitate to sign a model.
Aim to give an impression that says, “I could work with this model with complete confidence.”
At Liliana Models, we give our models individual advice on clothing and conduct ahead of their auditions.

Being Rejected Does Not Mean You Were Not Good Enough
As explained at the start, most rejections come down to fit with the project and timing.
- A model of a similar type had already been selected
- The direction differed from the image for that particular project
- The age range or requirements they were seeking did not match
None of these reasons have anything to do with your own appeal as a person. Do not let one result define you — keep applying. In practice, it is not unusual for models to be signed on their second or third attempt.
If you do want to reflect on a rejection, focus on the parts you can change next time, such as how you present yourself in photos or which agencies you apply to.
